EXHIBITION TEXT

Delgado Projects is pleased to present Dreamland, a group exhibition bringing together ten LA-based artists. The ethos of the exhibition focuses on the subconscious, individuality, and the value of dreamlike expression. It prompts viewers to venture into the imaginations of these artists and consider their own subconscious reality.

The topic of dreams when discussing art is invariably connected to the Surrealist movement. The tenets of this movement and style, which are defined by working against rational thought, embracing the absurd, and tapping into the honesty of the subconscious, are obvious and apparent in this group’s work. And while the show is grounded in surreal, dreamlike imagery, the diverse identities and practices of these artists within a progressive LA landscape often subtly satirize Surrealism and its masculine Parisian origins. Each artist maintains their own individual approach, nevertheless the collective cinematic references go further to also lampoon their own idealized LA setting of a utopic west. The resulting work features incongruous perspectives, dark humor, warped senses of time, embellished figures, and improbable colors all assembled with “fraught sexual and psychological forces hidden beneath the surface of reality.”

Dreamland underscores the role of the subconscious as a powerful influence on artistic practices, working in tandem with memories and experiences to build a road of endless interpretations.
